What are the best ear and nose hair trimmers for 2019? We really hope you enjoy our reviews as we answer that question!
First, we evaluate each product against some criteria:
- Trimming Quality – how well does it trim?
- Ease of Use – does it get in it’s own way?
- Charge Duration – how much trimming can you get done before changing batteries?
- Maintainability – care and feeding of the beast: what’s involved?
- Value – weighing the purchase price AND ongoing costs against its performance.
We’ve assigned each criteria a score from 1-10 to help you compare one product against another. We’ve also assigned a color-code to each score:
Ear and nose hair trimming can be a touchy subject. Would you embarrassed to buy a trimmer in store? Online might be a great option.
It’d be better not to be embarrassed about it at all. All men (a not a few women) are going to grow nose hair. Ear hair also starts showing up as we get older. Who knows why!
These problems can be taken care of with a pair of grooming scissors or tweezers, but it’s much safer and convenient to use a specialised trimmer — assuming you find a good one.
Read on as we take a look at some of the best:
Groom Mate Platinum XL
We were really impressed by this deceptively simple trimmer’s function and bomb-proof USA stainless steel construction.
We covered it on the blog right here, but read on for our quick rundown on this amazing ear and nose hair trimmer.
In a word, fantastic, but not perfect. It leaves around 1mm hairs behind, which is fine by me since that’s the safety margin between my inner mucus membranes and the awesome blade.
I personally never found it pulled my hairs while trimming. Some other users have found they had to keep operating the trimmer while removing it to avoid hair-pull.
Ease of Use
Could it be any easier? The trimmer is operated by turning the knob at the base while you hold the trimmer to your nose or ear.
The knob moves smoothly with a pleasant level of resistance. While you need to use both hands to operate the device, this isn’t a problem ergonomically.
Are you a glass half-full or half-empty type? Since the device is manually operated you could take the view that it’s always out of charge, but we prefer to see it as always charged!
The important point here is that the Groom Mate operates for as long as you can turn the knob. Hopefully forever!
The Groom Mate Platinum XL is suppied with a cleaning brush that I found does an excellent job of cleaning the device.
Some other users have found that the device needed to be disassembled to be cleaned. I found this simple to do, by removing a screw on the side. Then the centre barrel slides out of the outer cylinder, and you can clean the device easily.
The centre barrel is lightly greased, so you’ll need to be aware of that when you’re cleaning it. This is also an opportunity to re-lubricate the device to allow it to continue operating forever.
This trimmer has been built to last forever, and we see no reason that it wouldn’t.
It’s very well designed and competitively priced – and think it’s the last ear and nose hair trimmer you’ll ever need to buy – you can’t get better value than that!
Philips Norelco Nose Trimmer 5100 (NT9130/40)
This trimmer covers a lot of ground – it looks after the nose, ears, sideburns and all around whatever facial hair you have – think of it as your all in one detailer.
Speaking of details, read on to learn more.
Competition among nose and ear hair trimmers has really taken off! Doing a fantastic job of trimming ear and nose hairs (which the Philips Norelco definitely does – pain free too) is really the baseline now. The big question is – what else does it do?
In the case of the Philips Norelco Nose Trimmer 5100 the answer is: plenty!
It comes with an attached trimmer that can be used for touching up the edges of your sideburns, facial hair and neckline.
There’d be no point in mentioning all this unless it worked really well, and it does! Men have been nearly uniformly satisfied with the ear, nose and miscellaneous trimming this unit performs. Excellent!
Ease of Use
Since it comes with detachable heads for the separate trimmers the big question is how easy is it to change them? (Using it as a nose and ear trimmer is pretty straight forward).
It certainly is easy to change them. Men have have found no problems with using the interchangeable heads and swapping them in and out.
Once again, this unit is powered by an AA battery so it’s great for travel since those are available absolutely everywhere and you won’t need to take a charger with you.
The Nose Trimmer 5100 is washable for easy cleaning: rinse it under the tap and you’re done. Philips Norelco have also provided a handy brush for giving the thing a good sweep every once in a while, which will keep the cutters going strong.
What value! Not only do you get a pain-free and effective ear and nose hair trimmer, you get a very capable detailing trimmer to take care of your sideburns, beard, eyebrows etc. We´re delighted!
Panasonic Nose, Ear & Facial Hair Trimmer Wet/Dry with Vacuum Cleaning System
It’s hard to get excited about a nose hair trimmer, but this is the unit to be excited about.
The added vacuum (so often an ineffective gimmick on other kinds of trimmers) is great for making sure those pesky hairs don’t come tumbling out of your ear or nose at an inopportune moment (first date?).
But does it trim well? Does it hold a charge? Read on to find out.
The Panasonic ER430K features a rotary blade system that makes it very easy to remove stubborn hairs in the nose and ears without any pulling or yanking. The hypoallergenic blades on the ER430K are placed at a 60 degree angle so they match the contour of your nostrils (nice engineering that), and as a result the hairs are cut cleanly and evenly.
The cutting head is quite gentle for the sensitive insides of your ears and nose.
Ease of Use
Could it be any easier?
The Panasonic Vacuum Nose Trimmer has an ergonomic design that makes it easy to stick up your nose or in your ears. The blades are made of stainless steel which get the job done fast, and it can be used both wet and dry, so you can use it in the shower or at the sink.
The trimmer has a mirrored cap to help you locate any fugitive hairs. Some users have found the mirror in the cap a little dull and unreflective – if this happens to you, you most likely need to peel off yet another layer of plastic coating and there you will find a reflective glass.
Powered by an AA battery, the Panasonic ER430K Vacuum Trimmer gives you 90 minutes of operation, so those batteries should last you a very long time indeed.
Although the vacuum system neatly collects cut hairs, you’ll still have to rinse out the hair collection chamber. Fortunately, this is simply a matter of immersing the collection chamber in water. Since the groomer can be used in the shower, if you choose , you can also clean the unit under running water in the shower.
This Panasonic Vacuum Trimmer is quiet good value for your money, and is adored by its owners.
It’s usually available for under $20 and does its job perfectly as far as we can tell. Sounds like great value to us!
Panasonic Ear, Nose & Facial Hair Trimmer Wet/Dry with Vortex Cleaning System
Welcome to our review of the Panasonic ER-GN30-K Nose, Ear & Facial Hair Trimmer Wet/Dry with Vortex Cleaning System. Don’t worry if that product name sounds complicated, because this device isn’t.
This is a back to basics ear and nose hair trimmer (with a little fancy cleaning technology). How does it stand up against the nose mowing competition? Read on to find out.
The Panasonic ER-GN30-K Wet/Dry trimmer does what it says on the box – trims your ear and nose hairs, and trims them well. Just make sure your battery’s reasonably fresh (like you changed it sometime in the last six months) or it’ll start pulling on your hairs instead of cutting them. Ow.
It claims to be a facial hair trimmer as well, and indeed you can hold the trimmer up to your eyebrows or the edges of your beard to prune them a little, but it doesn’t have a dedicated head or guide for this, so we have difficulty taking this claim seriously.
Ease of Use
Yes, super easy. It’s a nice ergonomic design that’ll stop it slipping about. Unlike many other trimmers, it’ll function when held at any angle, which makes it easier to get to the stray hairs that may elude other trimmers.
It operates on a single “AA” battery, which should work for about an hour and half. This translates into about a year or so of trimming, assuming you’re not a yeti. Watch out when the battery gets low though – it’ll start pulling your nose hairs out instead of chopping them off.
And welcome to the one bell/whistle this unit has – the Vortex Cleaning System – and it’s a good one!
Turn the dial on the trimmer to the little faucet logo, and rinse the nozzle of the trimmer under a running tap – water enters the top of the trimmer, swirls around inside it giving it a thorough clean, and is ejected through a valve on the side. Users have found this works great, and is very easy in practise.
Even though it’s a lot cheaper than the other trimmers we’ve looked at, we’ve had to mark the Panasonic ER-GN30-K Nose, Ear & Facial Hair Trimmer down a little, since it doesn’t have as many functions as the others.
Still, it’s fantastic for its intended purpose, and we doubt you’ll find another unit this cheap that does what it does so well.
