Hello and welcome! Here we presnt the best body hair trimmers for 2017!
We evaluate each product against the following criteria:
- Effectiveness -how well does it trim?
- Comfort – can it trim you nicely without drawing blood?
- Versatility – is it a one-trick-pony, or can it take care of a few manscaping needs?
- Ease of use – do you need to be a contortionist to use it? Does it fit where it needs to?
- Value – considering both the purchase price AND ongoing costs.
We assign each criteria a value from 1-10 to help you choose the best option for you. We’ve also assigned a color-code to each score:
Remember that these are not scientific measures (yes, we’re saving up for our shaving/trimming laboratory) – just because we use a number doesn’t mean it’s an exact measure! Keep this in mind as you read the reviews.
As we’ve noted in the reviews, this is an odd product category, full of strange hybrids and interesting innovations.
This review is not so much a comparison of similar products, but a presentation of unique designs, or products that solve a unique problem. We hope you enjoy the reviews and learn something new — we sure did!
Braun Cruzer 6 Body Shaver
Braun Cruzer 6 Body Shaver – Review by Shaver Advice, rating: 8.4 out of 10
Massively popular and a crazy hybrid – what more could we say about the Braun Cruzer? Plenty!
The body hair trimmer product category seems to be full of oddities, but many of them are genuinely useful, and the Braun Cruzer 6 is one of them.
What makes this body hair trimmer work so well? Keep reading and we’ll tell you.
Did you know that Gillette owns Braun? You do now. This hybrid of the two companies’ specialties – Gillette’s wet shaving Fusion blades and Braun’s electric trimmers – has produced an exceptionally effective body hair trimmer.
The Braun Cruzer 6 can be used as an electric trimmer to reduce hair down to stubble, and the razor blades can then take that stubble down to smooth, clean hairless skin. This can be done in one pass using the two in conjunction. This would probably work best in the shower, and the trimmer’s designed for exactly that, being 100% waterproof.
Most users report few, or no nicks at all from the Braun Cruzer 6’s trimmer-shaver combination. Of course, care should always be taken with sensitive areas – pull the skin tight!
The trimmer has exceptionally small teeth: 1mm. This makes it much less likely you’ll get some skin between them, and the Gillette Fusion razor blades are the result of many years of R&D on comfortable and safe shaving.
As we’ve said, this is a hybrid that manages to capture the best of both worlds.
The trimmer has three length settings: 0.6mm, 3mm and 8mm. This provides a strong range of grooming options – from neatening body hair to completely obliterating it!
Of course, to remove it completely, the Fusion blade gets your skin to baby-bottom smoothness.
The unit is designed to be used (and even stored!) in the shower, where you’ll enjoy the most effective shaving performance. However, you can always use it outside the shower, maybe with a gel or foam to smooth things out.
Most people who use the Braun Cruzer 6 find it very easy to use. The trimmer is comfortable to hold with rubber grips on the side, and as there’s no power cord to get in the way, it’s very easy to use all over your body.
It will hold 50 minutes of charge, plenty of time to get rid of all the hair you want, and for once the charging stand takes up very little space on the bathroom counter.
The only difficulty we can see is the slide in/out Fusion blade – it can be a little too easy to accidentally extend or retract the blade when you don’t mean to!
We’d give it a 10 for value if it didn’t have Fusion blades. They’re expensive to replace, and will wear out quickly when they’re used over the body. You can always use a different kind of Gillette blade instead.
Otherwise the Braun Cruzer 6 is excellent value. It trims and shaves very well, and comes at a good price for a 100% waterproof unit.
Philips Norelco BG2040/34 Bodygroom 7100
Philips Norelco BG2040/34 Bodygroom 7100 – Review by Shaver Advice, rating: 8.4 out of 10
The Philips Norelco Bodygroom 7100 is by far one of the most popular body hair trimmers on the market.
Philips Norelco have used their extensive history of electric shaver manufacture to bring a high-performing trimmer to market and keep it at the top – yet not without a few hiccups on the way.
Read on to learn more.
The Bodygroom 7100 is one of the most popular body hair trimmers on the market for a reason. It does an amazing job of reducing body hair to nothing, or alternatively trimming it down to a few millimeters of rugged manscape.
Philips Norelco have added a few thoughtful features to get the Bodygroom 7100 shaving so well. There are ‘pre-trimmers’ either side of the shave head that pre-cut long hairs before they reach the shaver. This ensures that hairs of all lengths will be cut and it won’t be necessary to do a pre-trim before shaving.
At the other end of the unit there’s an adjustable trimmer with five different length settings. The trimmer can be used to merely shorten, rather than shave body hair, allowing a hirsute but neat look.
Most men use this body hair trimmer with little or no irritation.
There have been a few reports of minor nicks from the ‘pre-trimmers’, while shaving without pulling the skin tight. This may occur if one of the pre-timmers comes into contact with a skin fold. This should not occur when the unit is used correctly.
The shaving blades are self-sharpening, according to Philips Norelco, which means not only do they cut well, they should continue to cut without irritation as the unit ages. The surfaces that come into contact with the skin are constructed from hypoallergenic (fancy way of saying it causes few allergic reactions) materials, so the consistent contact with your skin shouldn’t cause any problems over time.
The Philips Norelco Bodygroom 7100 is a body hair trimmer that can trim almost anywhere, and believe us, men have tested it everywhere. With good results. Just remember what we said earlier about pulling skin tight while you’re trimming.
The adjustable trimmer on the bottom of the unit is very useful for either preparing an area prior to shaving, or to just create a neat, uniform appearance in you body hair, a look particularly popular for the chest.
Added to this the Bodygroom 7100 can be used both wet and dry, which means you can use it with a foam or gel to reduce irritation, or you can use it in the shower.
It’s rechargeable and used cordlessly, which makes it very convenient to maneuver about your body without getting tangled up in a cord. A full charge lasts for 50 minutes, which should be plenty of time to get the results you need.
Some men have found the head a little wide to get into tricky areas, so depending on what you’d like to use it for this may be a deterrent for you.
The Philips Norelco Bodygroom 7100 has been around for a while, and has come down from its original price. This improves this body hair trimmer’s value proposition considerably.
While it performs admirably for the price, there have been some complaints about the built-in rechargeable batteries not holding their charge well as the unit ages. This has been such an issue that online guides have been published on replacing the batteries (they’re usually not user-serviceable). Although, it says something about the popularity and effectiveness of the trimmer that men would rather fix it themselves than replace it.
The only ongoing cost associated with this trimmer is replacing the shaving foil, which will need to be done every six months or so. Make sure you can get your hands on these before you consider buying the trimmer!
Mangroomer Ultimate Pro Back Shaver
Mangroomer Ultimate Pro Back Shaver – Review by Shaver Advice, rating: 7.8 out of 10
Many people would be surprised to learn the level of discomfort and embarrassment men can feel about back hair. After years of waxing, lasers, and contortionist shaving, many men give up and resolve to never take their shirt off in public again.
Then along comes the Mangroomer Ultimate Pro Back Shaver. Sure, it looks like a novelty back scratcher but those back scratchers work, right? Well, so does the Mangroomer.
This is a review on body hair trimmers, and this device fits right in here – it can be used for all sorts of places, not just the back!
Read on to find out why this device has revolutionized some men’s lives.
The Ultimate Pro Back Shaver does what its supposed to. It removes back hair effectively.
The adjustable handle makes it simple to reach all areas of the back, and the unit comes with two different head attachments – one is a trimmer that can reduce a forest to stubble, and the other is a foil shaver that reduces the stubble to nothing.
While this requires two passes, many men are able to completely shave their back in as little as eight minutes. The end result is a uniformly smooth, hairless back.
Most men use this body hair trimmer with little or no irritation. There have been some reports of ‘shaver burn’ using the Mangroomer, but they’re in the minority. As long as hair is trimmed before shaving, there should be no issues with skin irritation or hair pulling.
The biggest selling point of the Ultimate Pro Back Shaver is of course the extensible, angled handle. Men have found that it makes every area of the back accessible without discomfort or contortion.
While it’s obviously designed to be used for the back, many men use the Mangroomer Ultimate Pro to trim and shave other areas of their bodies – just about everywhere.
Keep in mind that the back-specific design of this body hair trimmer makes it a bit more awkward for use on other areas, so it won’t be as convenient to use as a generic body hair trimmer.
Mangroomer blithely state one of the benefits of the Ultimate Pro Back Shaver is that it requires no shaving cream or gel for proper use – we take this to mean that it’s for dry use only – don’t take it in the shower!
Since it’s powered by a rechargeable battery, there are no cords to get in the way. The first time you charge it, it’ll need a whopping 18-24 hours to fully charge, and 2-3 hours to charge after the first time. This charge time is OK, but if shaving your back is part of your morning routine, you’ll have to get up at 4 a.m. to make sure it’s charged in time, or remember to plug it in the night before.
Other than that, most men find the Ultimate Pro Back Shaver easy and fast to use.
There are no ongoing costs associated with running the unit, however Mangroomer don’t provide replaceable parts either. You can expect a reduction in performance from the shave head, trimmer and battery over time. You’ll be able to extend the life of the shaver and trimmer by cleaning and lubricating them regularly.
However, since it’s the only thing on the market that does what it does so effectively, we feel the Mangroomer Ultimate Pro Back Shaver is excellent value.
